On Saturday 17th October the Brisbane RSC entered a team of finely tuned athletes into the inaugural Brisbane Supporters Clubs Six a Side Soccer competition.
The Brisbane RSC team of Neil, Craig, Billy, Martin, Dennis, Kim, Jamie, Andy, Donald and Gary were drawn into a tough group ‘A’ where they faced teams from Slacks Creek, The Who, Spurs, Park Ridge and Old firm Rivals Celtic.
As the temperature soared our guys took to the fields in their new Brisbane RSC, tops provided by Dennis’s company Alba (Thanks very much), to face the home team Slacks Creek but despite controlling all of the game they went down 2-0 to the locals.
Next up was the Old Firm Game and again despite being in control lost 1-0 to a rapidly expanding Celtic team. Our third game brought us our first point but still no goals as we drew 0-0 with The Who but it wasn’t enough to keep us in contention for a semi final place.
As we went into our 4th game against Spurs our main objective was to score a goal and we didn’t have to wait long before Donald put us 1-0 up but Spurs never gave up and came back to take a 2-1 lead with some very lucky attacking but the goal of the match settled it at 2-2 as Craig beat 1, then 2, then 3 (he’ll tell you 4) before lashing the ball into the top corner.
Our final game was against Park Ridge who were sitting top of the group and with legs becoming very tired we went down 1-0 thanks to some outstanding saves from Neil. The day was enjoyed by all and despite playing against some younger and fitter teams the Brisbane RSC didn’t look out of place. Congratulations to Park ridge who eventually won the tournament by beating Celtic on penalties in the final.
Thanks to Arj and Lee for organising the competition and to all those who played. Brisbane RSC already looking to improve at the next tournament.
